Manhattan is so densely packed that staying at a different hotel can revolutionize your experience of the city. If Upper Midtown is on your list of “neighbourhoods yet to explore”, try Firmdale’s new stateside venture, The Whitby. The hotel is founders Tim and Kit Kemp’s second New York property—their first, Crosby Street Hotel, opened in 2009 and has been a roaring success. The new 86-bedroom property looks set to follow suit. As with all Firmdale properties, the design has Kit Kemp’s fingerprints all over it, with her signature mix of colours and texture enlivened by the floor-to-ceiling windows that feature in every room. The Bar and Restaurant offers relaxed all-day dining, while one wall of the Orangery features 40 beautifully crafted porcelain vessels by Martha Freud, each lit from within to reveal New York landmarks.
