One of the more unpredictable consequences of the Trump presidency is the re-emergence of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, The Handmaid’s Tale, at the top of the bestseller lists (a new adaptation starring Elisabeth Moss and Joseph Fiennes was also picked up by Channel 4 this week). Thankfully, we need not just look to the past for responses to our current political predicament: shortly after the election, Pulitzer- and Tony Award-winning playwright Robert Schenkkan wrote Building the Wall, a scathing and at times horrifying take on where a Trump presidency might lead us. Yet to be staged in the UK, Platform Presents are offering the curious the chance to attend a reading of a play at London’s Bush Theatre at the end of May, with actors Zawe Ashton and Jason Watkins taking up reading duties, and the Old Vic 12 alumnus Jesse Jones directing. Set up by actress Gala Gordon and producer Isabella Macpherson, Platform Presents is a non-profit theatre company designed to foster emerging talent. All funds raised will go towards their Rising Star Fund.
