North: Fashioning Identity at Somerset House

Somerset House’s new exhibition, North: Fashioning Identity, will provide a long overdue examination of the way northern culture has shaped the ostensibly London-centric British fashion industry. With the return of streetwear and the emergence of designers like Off-White’s Virgil Abloh (who last year collaborated with architect Ben Kelly to recreate the iconic Manchester nightclub Haçienda’s DJ booth at Art Basel Miami Beach), the North is finally getting the attention it deserves. Co-curated by SHOWstudio editor-at-large Lou Stoppard and Adam Murray, lecturer at Manchester School of Art and Central Saint Martins, the exhibition will feature photographs, clothes and artworks by the likes of Corinne Day, Raf Simons, Paul Smith, Gareth Pugh, Nick Knight, Glen Luchford, Jamie Hawkesworth and David Sims. A particular highlight will be a new film by Doncaster-born photographer Alasdair McLellan, in which he revisits the sites of his youth.
