“That’s cute” has become one of those expressions that, when rolled out, one is never sure if the speaker is being sarcastic, patronizing or just genuinely thinks something is, you know, cute. Thankfully, when accessories designer Ming Ray describes her collection as “Haute Cute”, it only takes a cursory glance at the designs to know she is completely in earnest. A graduate of the London College of Fashion-trained, Ming Ray Wang took up design positions at Alexander McQueen and Jimmy Choo before striking out on her own with a unique brand that’s at once fun and playful without being too simpering or trite. The key is in the mixing of styles and signatures, and executing them with luxury Italian craftsmanship: the shapes are boxy (think Her Majesty’s signature Launer bags), the colours are girlish pinks, pastels and metallics, and the handles are festooned with tongue-in-cheek Jeff Koons-style hearts or shooting-star motifs. It shouldn’t work, and yet somehow it does. Our favourite? The Supernova in blush.
