When did capsule collections become such a thing? According to Business of Fashion, they were popularized by Donna Karan in the 1980s, when the idea was to create a mini-edit of the most important pieces in a designer’s collection. In the 30 years since, the idea has taken on a life of its own, with retailers competing to offer designer exclusives. The latest and greatest to enter the market is the Gucci x Mr Porter menswear collaboration. Featuring 43 pieces, the collection features classic tailoring with that Gucci twist. Anyone who has followed the brand since creative director Alessandro Michele took over will know he loves a good motif: expect bees, tigers, cats and skeletons this time around, as well as plenty of prints and textures. It covers everything from shoes to sweaters, ties, watches and scarves so the conservative can just dip a toe in while the more adventurous can go all in.
